The Art of the Re-Touch

One of the most under valued services these days is, in a world filled with high-end phone cameras, product photography, and even more so, high-end product re-touching.

The potential to sell your product online without your clients ability to touch, feel and try them on is an art all of it’s own. You need to showcase your product in a way that maximises the potential for a prospective customer to press the ‘BUY’ button. The best way to do this is represent your product in the best way possible.

Sure you need to have good lighting, take images of all the angles etc, but if the product doesn’t look ‘perfect’ then there’s a good chance you’ll lose that potential sale.

In this instance, let’s look at shoes. Now, no shoe is perfect, often there are traces of glue around the sole where it is attatched. Laces are generally bulky and not very streamed lined making them appear bulbous and more often then not, the silhoette of a shoe is generally uneven and undulating. All of these things we never really notice when the product is in our hand, however, looking at our potential new shoe online all these minor faults are highlighted.

Below are a few examples of how re-touching can dramatically effect the feel of an item without compromising the integrity of the product. Which one would you more likely purchase, the left or the right?

Take note of the slight waves in the toe area of these Pumas on the left and how much more appealing it noe looks in the image on the right. Also note the glue line quite visible where the sole is attatched in image left.

Again, notice the inconsistant fabric folds and shadows on the left compared to the smoothness in the image on the right.

Colour is richer and closer to that of the real life item in the image on the right. Also note the glue line quite visible where the sole is attatched in image left.

A great example of how high-end re-touching has impoved this football boot. The main bulk of the shoe now appears smooth and perfect and is much more entocing to purchase than the original shot on the left. Keep in mind these small faults are only really visible under studio lighting and not percieved through the naked eye when held in your hand. Also note the glue line quite visible where the sole is attatched in image left.

Feel like your products need a make-over? Drop me an email and let’s get your potential customers clicking the ‘BUY’ button now. :)
